Every year, thousands flock to the Napa Valley for the annual Napa/Sonoma harvest time. Better known as simply “Crush” this time from late August to October is an exciting vacation opportunity for any wine enthusiast. On average, Napa and Sonoma crush around 100,000 grapes each during this special time of year. The key element in knowing exactly when to pick the grapes is when the grape sugar level, or “brix” reaches the perfect stage. This is different for each grape varietal. Champagne, for instance, requires the lowest sugar level at 17; therefore, it is the first grape to be picked. Chardonnay comes in next with a 22 brix, and reds are last with 24.
